Final note about the Philippines…
A major player in the Huk leadership was a former GI, William Pomeroy. He returned to the Philippines after WW II, met and married a Huk woman while in college and began working with the Huks. He and his wife were captured in Nov. '52, shortly after I left the Philippines and were sentenced to death. I assumed they had been executed but a year ago his name crossed my mind and I searched the internet for William Pomeroy. Turns out he is living in Greenwich Village, NY City, writing books and lecturing. He and his wife served ten years in prison in the Philippines. I ordered his book, The Forest, an account of his life with the Huks in the forest around Mt. Arayat. Interesting book. The founder and leader of the Hukbalahap movement, Luis Taruc surrendered to army troops in 1957. Every Huk that surrendered received amnesty and 40-acres of farmland. So in the end, the Huks got what they fought for for 25-years. Who was right and who was wrong?
